Issue Position: Cracking Down on Violent Crime

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014
Location: Dover, DE

Wilmington, our business capital and largest city, was recently named the most dangerous city in America based on violent crime per capita. This is a tragedy for the families and children who live in and around the city, and it affects the entire state. In fact, throughout our entire state, the year-to-date number of homicides has steadily increased from 2011 through this year. Delaware is not the first state to be challenged by crime, and there are proven, common sense approaches to dealing with violent crime that we have not yet implemented here in Delaware. I intend to play a central leadership role as Attorney General in coordinating agencies and different levels of government to implement some of the solutions that have worked elsewhere around the country, including evidence-based enforcement and community-building efforts in targeted high-crime areas and against identified high-level criminals, aggressive gun interdiction and prosecution strategies, and a more visible street-level law enforcement presence. There is no substitute for having an active and visible law enforcement presence in the neighborhoods that are the source of much of our state's violence, establishing positive relationships with the community, disrupting the work of criminals, and taking the ones who still don't get the message off the streets. As Attorney General, I will lead these efforts and make sure Delaware's prosecutors vigorously and effectively prosecute those who have brought violence to our streets.
